Rev. Doctor Allen Hopkins Sr Obituary

Rev. Doctor Allen B. Hopkins, Sr. of Newport News, VA, passed away in his home on February 29, 2024, at the age of 80, with his family by his side. Allen was born on December 1, 1943, in Norfolk, VA, where his father was stationed during his time in the Navy. He grew up on Chincoteague Island, where he attended Chincoteague Elementary School and Chincoteague High School and was a member of Union Baptist Church. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Christopher Newport College in 1972; he would later be called into the service of our Lord and attend South Eastern Baptist Theological Seminar, Wake Forest, NC, in 1987, where he earned his Masters in Divinity and received a Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies, from the International Seminary Plymouth, FL in 2001.

Allen served as Pastor at Greenpond Baptist Church, Chatham, VA; Smyrna Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, VA; Jerusalem Baptist Church, Warsaw, VA; Carrow Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, VA; and Pine Chapel Baptist Church, Hampton, VA. He served as Interim Pastor at Island Baptist Church, Chincoteague Island, VA, and Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, Hampton, VA.

Allen was a man of many talents and hobbies. He was a sprinter in High School, a skier, a motorcycle rider, a carpenter, a musician, and a singer, to name a few. He touched many lives in his years as a Social Worker, a Probation and Parole Officer, and especially as a Pastor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice Allen Hopkins and Olive Hill Hopkins of Chincoteague Island, VA, and his beloved grandmother, Lillian Andrews Hopkins of Chincoteague Island, VA. his father-in-law, Author J. Reynolds, and his mother-in-law, Emma Mary Powell Reynolds, of Hampton, VA.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Emma Faye Hopkins, and his son, Allen B. Hopkins, Jr.

(wife Rachel) of Alabama, his daughter Lisa Kimberly Hopkins Dawley (husband Timothy) of Newport News, VA. Grandsons Shawn Matthew Dawley, of Virginia Beach, VA, Tyler Jay Dawley of Newport News, VA; and Police Officer Johnathan Allen Dawley of Newport News, VA; Stephan P. Hopkins of Texas, Scott Allen Hopkins of Texas, Shana Faye Hopkins Grieve of New York, Haley Hopkins of Texas, and his multiple great-grandchildren.

The Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at Sayler Funeral Home, Chincoteague Island, VA, with a viewing one hour prior.
