Gerald Clayton "Jerry" West, 94, of Chincoteague Island, passed away on January 12, 2018 at his residence.
Born in Ashtabula, Ohio, in 1923, Jerry was a World War II veteran, serving as a radio intercept operator in the European Theater of Operations. He was an electronics technician and supervisor working in Ohio, France, Germany, and Virginia. He held the position of supervisor for RCA at NASA’s weather tracking station at Wallops Island and later at NOAA’s Weather Satellite Tracking Station.
He is a past member of Kiwanis, Ruritans, Lions, a past director for the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce, and a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church. For many years Jerry served as volunteer, director and president of The Oyster & Maritime Museum, now known as The Museum of Chincoteague.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Virginia, his sons Gerald M. West and wife Nancy of Chincoteague, John C. West and wife Julie or Ruckersville VA, and James M. West and wife Donna of Chincoteague. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jessica , Jordan, Kelly, Lauren, Aaron, Tanya, Cody, Hailey, Brittney, Gary, Carina, and Shelby, and by his 10 great-grandchildren, and his step-children, Gwen Bowersox, Nancy Bowersox, and Douglas Bowersox and wife Dixie; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nicki West.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, January 15, 2018, 11:00 am at the Saint Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church, Chincoteague Island, VA , with Father Michael Imperial, officiating.
