T. Maureen Toy Obituary

T. Maureen Toy-of Captains Cove, Greenbackville,VA
died on May 5th, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Maureen was the daughter of Harry R. Toy and Mary Gordon Toy. Born in Chester PA, Maureen
resided in Wilmington for 16 years. In 1965, she entered the Benedictine Order of Sisters at St. Gertrude Monastery in Ridgely, MD and was a member of the community for 14 years. Maureen's love of God and of her family, as well as her commitment to education and her community, carried her through life.
Maureen received her Bachelor and two Master Degrees from Loyola University in Baltimore, MD where she received "the John E.Wise Award for Excellence in Education at the Graduate Level." She was also inducted into the National Jesuit Honor Society (Alpha Sigma Nu). 
Maureen was a teacher in Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey for over 26 years and was a school administrator/principal for 6 years. Most of Maureen's teaching career was devoted to working with developmentally disabled children and young adults at every grade level. She had a deep love and concern for all people, but she was an advocate for developmentally disabled, disadvantaged, and mentally challenged children and adults, as well.
In her lifetime, Maureen was active in many professional and community organizations, she served on various Boards of Directors and was appointed to various Commissions by State Government. She worked for peace, social justice and she served as a human and civil rights activist her entire life. Maureen was affectionately known as, "The Toy Lady", to the many people she helped with her time, talents, and finances. Maureen received many academic and community awards, and before she retired she was named, "A Hometown Hero" by the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association.
In addition to her education and community affiliations, Maureen found happiness playing a sextet (six-sided) harmonica, singing, listening to music, reading, and making people laugh. Maureen regularly enlivened discussions and charmed her family, friends, and colleagues with graciousness, kindness, generousness and whit. She was dearly loved by all who knew her.
Prior to her death, Maureen was and active member; of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, the Oblates of St. Benedict (St. Gertrude Monastery, Newark, DE), the 3C's of Chincoteague, the Just Us Singers of Chincoteague, the NJ Right to Life, the NJ Assoc. of School Administrators and the NJ Principal and Supervisors Assoc. 
Maureen was predeceased by her parents and brother, Kevin Toy. She is survived by her brother, Joseph Gordon Toy of Greenbackville, VA; her sister Gerardine Weiss and her husband, Paul F. Weiss of Annapolis, MD; and several nephews and nieces. Maureen treasured both her natural and religious families and cherished the time spent with them.
A celebration of Life will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday, May 22nd, 2021 at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church on Church Street in Chincoteague Island, VA. Internment will be in the Columbarium Garden behind St. Andrew Church.
