Carl “Skip” Olson Bowman, 70, of Chincoteague, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at his home in Chincoteague, Virginia. He was born on July 14, 1954, in Easton, Pennsylvania, to the late Alice Williams Bernstein and Carl E. Bowman, Jr.
After graduating from Chincoteague High School in 1972, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, where he served for four years. He then attended Eastern Shore Community College, where he earned an associate’s degree in Electrical/Electronics Technology. Immediately thereafter, he was employed in his field by various NASA contractors for 40 years.
Skip enjoyed his retirement, engaging in his favorite hobbies such as shooting at the gun range, woodworking, carving, sewing, and taking care of his cats. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Roxanne Thornton of Chincoteague; their daughter, Tara A. Mather (Ben); their grandson, W. Sebastian Mather; his sister, Debbie Bowman Marsh; his brother, Jake Bernstein (Judy); along with nieces, a nephew, and several cousins. He was predeceased by their granddaughter, Sydney A. Mather.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at Salyer Funeral Home, Chincoteague Island, Virginia, with Rev. William Maury Enright officiating.
