Daniel Bernstein Obituary

Daniel Bernstein, 88, of Chincoteague Island, Virginia, passed into the arms of the Lord on February 20, 2026.  Daniel was born on February 15, 1938, to Jacob and Mary Bernstein in Shamokin, PA.

Daniel graduated from Chincoteague High School in 1956. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served for two years, followed by 8 years as a Marine Corps reservist.

After his active service in the Marine Corps, Daniel married his best friend and love of his life, Peggy Quillen. They were married for 67 years. 

He joined his dad in the garment business in Chincoteague and operated Island Manufacturing Company for over 20 years. Later, he operated Piney Island Country Store, best known for his Round-Up and Cheese Steak subs, pizzas, and bike rentals.  Soon after, with his passion for repairing bicycles and helping others, Daniel and his wife, Peggy, opened the Midtown Bike Store.

Daniel was a faithful member of Wattsville United Methodist Church and served as treasurer and trustee.

Daniel leaves behind his wife, Peggy; sons, Aaron (Leeanne), Bryan (Brenda), and Kerry (Heather); grandchildren, Kristoffer (Sarah), Jeremy, and Kehli MacLean (Thomas); great-grandsons, Jaxson and Korbyn; and siblings, Richard (Ellen), Faith, and Nicholas (Judy).

Also survived by sisters-in-law Linda Bernstein, Terry Bernstein, Nancy Matthews; very special niece and nephew Debbie and Jamie Parks, and a host of other nieces and nephews.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Mary; mother and father-in-law Louise and Newman Quillen; brothers Barry, David (Alice), Joseph (Christine), Michael, daughter in law Terrie Bernstein and brother-in-law Thomas Matthews.

Funeral services will be held at Salyer Funeral Home, Chincoteague Island, VA, on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 2:00 pm with Rev. Maurice Enright officiating.  Burial will take place in Downing’s Cemetery in Oak Hall, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Wattsville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 44, Wattsville, VA  23483
