David Alexander Bourne

David Alexander Bourne (1921 - 2011)

David Bourne was an extraordinarily determined individual who enjoyed life and remained active and vibrant until age 90. David touched the lives of many, both personally and professionally.

He was born to the Irish immigrant Alice Dobbins and Barbados-born
Edward, and he was raised in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He remarked often that he was grateful that he had a happy childhood despite losing his mother at an early age. He had fond memories of his parents and childhood visits to Ireland and Barbados. David and his father raised his 7-year old brother Jim, who died just last month.

David was an engineer who helped pioneer flight simulation
technology at Link Aviation, worked on radar simulation at
Martin Marietta, and had a pivotal role in developing a variety of
innovative products for IBM, including the earliest prototypes of
supermarket scanning technology. All this came from a humble start as
an aviation mechanic serving in the Navy in World War II.

Upon retirement from IBM, David embarked on a new adventure becoming a
stockbroker and served as a broker with Prescott, Ball and Turbin. He was diligent in researching the stocks he traded and dedicated significant effort to all his endeavors. He continued day-trading until medical problems began with a fractured hip a few months ago.

David was a person who appreciated the swirl of fall leaves and the
excitement of a Halloween costume paraded at the Chenango Bridge Civic
Center. His Halloween costumes and floats for the GOP were legendary and examples of his creative nature.

He loved to fish and did so from his summer home in Lake George, NY.
He had also built a home on Long Lake in Maine and renovated a home in Osprey, Florida. David was always open to an adventure and seeking what he termed as F-U-N - fun! He operated a snowmobile in Maine and captained a motor boat in Florida.

In all of life's adventures, he was joined by his beloved wife Ethel.
David and Ethel were happily married for 70 years. They were
inseparable companions and he was always concerned with her happiness
and comfort. Even strangers commented on their tenderness and devotion
to one another. They were blessed with 7 decades of joy and two
children, David and Cheryl. He was kind and generous to all who knew
him, especially, his wife Ethel, who knew him best!

David is survived by the families of David and Theresa Bourne of
Chincoteague, VA, and Cheryl and Larry Kerr of Vestal, NY. David leaves behind several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on August 20th in Chincoteague at 11am,
at Sayler Funeral home, Inc.
