Donald B. “Donnie” Holloway, 74, of Chincoteague Island, son of the late Donald Bryce Holloway and Emily Jester Niblett, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Thursday, July 28, 2023, at Alice B. Tawes Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Crisfield, MD. Born on June 11, 1949, Donnie was a 1967 graduate of Chincoteague High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator, earning the rank of Sergeant. Following an honorable discharge, Donnie worked at the Chesapeake Plywood Plant in Pocomoke City, MD, before beginning a career that spanned over three decades as a contractor at NASA-Wallops Flight Facility. Donnie was a lifelong community servant with a passion to serve others. He was a Life Member of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, with 49 years of service. He served as President of the Volunteer Fire Department from 1986 to 1987 and served many years on the Board of Directors. Donnie chaired the Hamburger Stand for many years and enjoyed seeing his carnival family every July. Donnie was a dedicated member of the American Legion Post 159. He was a member of Union Baptist Church and the Anglers Sunday School class. Donnie was active with North Accomack Little League for over two decades and had many fond memories of his “Colts” teams.
Donnie had a profound love for the outdoors. He was an avid boater and duck hunter, he loved to clam, oyster, and fish. He enjoyed decoy carving and was active with the Chincoteague Decoy Carvers Association and the Chincoteague Island Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Donnie is survived by his two sons, Colonel Donnie Wayne Holloway, USAF Ret. of Springfield, VA, and Kevin Holloway of Greenbackville, sister Susie Lewis (Herbie) of Wattsville, brother SMSgt Ken Holloway, USAF, Ret. (Karen) of Mustang, OK, five grandchildren: Katherine, Dustin, Camden, Johnathan, and Maddie, two great-grandchildren: Lincoln and Wynn, special cousin Bonnie Gene Holloway, close family friend Dr. Stephanie Zedlar, several cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his precious wife, Betty Jo Holloway. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, July 30th, 2023, at 2:00 PM, at the Union Baptist Church on Chincoteague Island with Rev. Dr. Kevin Eley officiating. The interment will take place at the John W. Taylor cemetery in Temperanceville. Following the service, a reception will be held at the Dining Hall at Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, located at 5052 Deep Hole Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the North Accomack Little League, P.O. Box 381, Chincoteague Island, Virginia, or the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 691, Chincoteague Island, Virginia.
