James Calvin Flowers, known as J.C. to friends and family, 86 of Atlantic, VA passed away December 1 , 2022 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, Va. He was born in South Creek, NC on October 19, 1936 to the late Samuel and Blanche (Gaskill) Flowers.
J.C. served as a lineman for Vepco before enlisting in the Virginia State Police Academy where he served for 34 years before retiring as a sergeant in 1996. He also served in the National Guard in Norfolk, Va and the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve on Chincoteague Island, VA. J.C. served as an Election Chief for his local precinct over the years and was a member of the Virginia State Police Association and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed monthly retired Police breakfast meetings throughout his retirement and also loved having coffee and laughs with his good friends in his unofficial breakfast club.
J.C. was well known for his love of fishing and duck hunting with special friends. He was also known for his incredible mechanical ability and could fix just about anything.
In addition to his many friends, J.C. is survived by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Jeanne Flowers; two children, David Wayne Flowers and his wife Jennifer of VA Beach, VA, Candy Russ of Cordova, MD; five grandchildren, Jonathan Flowers and his wife Chelsea of Chincoteague Island, VA, Jamie Russ of Cordova, MD, Alyssa Russ and her husband Jared of VA Beach, VA, Michaela Russ of Cordova, MD and Lance Lawson and his wife Maddie of Suffolk, VA; five great grandchildren, Alanna, Noah, Gabriel, Brinley, and London; as well as many special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lucille Johnson, son-in-law, Leo Russ, and great grandson Vesper Wayne Flowers.
To honor the life of J.C., a graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2022 at 2 PM at Assawoman United Methodist Church Cemetery in Assawoman, VA with a reception immediately following at Atlantic Volunteer Fire Dept..
