John B. Savage

John Burton Savage, 92, of Chincoteague Island, Virginia passed away Saturday February 10, 2018. Born on Chincoteague Island, Virginia on September 29, 1925, he was the son of the late Ernest and Elsie Mae (Quillen) Savage.

John was predeceased by his wife, Elaine. He was a waterman and at one time worked in construction for Evans Construction Co., of Salisbury, MD. In his younger days he enjoyed riding horses and rode in the pony penning and swims. He was one of the original 12 saltwater cowboys. He rode with Wyle Maddox, Shreves Wimbrow, and Cudge Mears. John was also an avid hunter and worked as a guide at the Popes Island Hunt Club.

John is survived by his four sons, Larry Savage, David Savage and his wife Patsy, Greg Savage and his wife Kathy, all of Chincoteague, and Raymond Savage of New Church; six grandchildren, Shannon Lindsey and her husband Mike of New Church, Ruth Ann Britton and her husband David, Dennie Savage and B.J. of Chincoteague, Daniel Savage and wife Shelly of New Church, Meghan Johnson and her husband Josh of Tennessee, and Raven Savage of New Church; ten great grandchildren; one great great grandson; two sisters, Louise Quillen of Chincoteague and Elsie Tatem of Cheriton; two brothers, Harold Savage and his wife Ernestine, Terry Savage and his wife Betty Jean all of Chincoteague; several nieces, nephews, and a special friend, Joe Boy Reed.

Besides his parents he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert "Burt" Savage and William "Bill" Savage, sister, Ernestine Hall and a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Savage.

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 15th, 2018 at 2 PM at Salyer Funeral Home, Inc. on Chincoteague Island, VA with Rev. Maurice Enright officiating. Family and friends are invited to call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held at the Mechanics Cemetery on Chincoteague Island, VA.
