Lois C. Hardy of Chincoteague passed away peacefully March 25, 2022. She was born Lois Janet Clauss in Allentown, PA during a blizzard on February 23, 1934 to parents Charles Edward Clauss and Evelyn Moll Clauss.
She attended Cedar Crest College for 2 years before marrying Robert W. Hardy in 1954. When the couple moved to Columbus, Ohio, she completed her B.A. at Ohio State University. After divorcing her husband in 1968, she returned to university to complete a J.D. from George Washington University in 1973.
Lois practiced law first in Northern Virginia before moving to Chincoteague in 1979, where she practiced as a small town lawyer for over 30 years.
During her high school years in Allentown, she was an accomplished member of the synchronized swimming team. Her love of swimming carried through the rest of her life. After moving to Chincoteague, she became a Water Safety Instructor for the American Red Cross, and taught swimming classes for Chincoteague children.
As a child, Lois developed a special relationship with animals, and as an adult, she always had a furry friend by her side. She worked with several of her dogs to visit school children and assisted living facilities, and was a member of Pets On Wheels of Delmarva.
Lois is survived by brother John (Taleen) Clauss, daughters Janine Howard and Lisa Hardy, nephew Collin (Julie) Clauss. She is preceded in death by son-in-law Edward J. Howard.
Memorial donations can be made to the League of Women Voters or Pets on Wheels of Delmarva.
