Robert Donald Umphlett Sr., 79, of Chincoteague Island, VA, passed away on December 10, 2024, at Medstar Georgetown Union Hospital in Washington, DC. Bobby was born in Nassawaddox, VA, on November 16, 1945, to the late Robert Elisha Umphlett and Agnes (Lewis) Umphlett.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Bobby became a master builder for 52 years. He was a well-known decoy carver, winning many ribbons and awards. Bobby mentored many people in the art of carving, fishing, hunting, and clamming. Bobby was a devout Christian who loved his family and his church. (Church by the Beach). He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Hagler Umphlett; his son, Robert Umphlett Jr (Angie), grand-daughter Elaina Midgett (Kyle); grandson, Joel Umphlett; great-grandson, Wyatt Midgett, sisters Audry Justice and Joyce Reed, and brother-in-law, Tommy Hagler (Judy), he also had special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Myra Umphlett.
Services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, December 13, 2024, at Church by the Beach on Chincoteague Island, VA. Visitation will be one hour prior.
