Thomas James Helwig, 92, of Chincoteague Island, VA passed away on July 17, 2021 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, VA.
He was born in Verga, NJ on February 16, 1929 to the late Richard and Edith (Moon) Helwig. Tom attended local schools in Verga, NJ, located in South Jersey. After high school he and his brother Charles enlisted in the military. He served in the United States Army for four years and fought in the WWII. Tom was a skilled carpenter where he built boats, both interior and exterior and was part of the Carpenters Union. During his free time, he enjoyed flying his personal plane. He became a Free Mason through the induction of his close friend, Richard Ackerman.
Thomas is survived by his loving spouse of 13 years, Patricia Helwig of Chincoteague Island, VA; two daughters, Laura Lynn Wildt and her husband Mark of Whitesboro, TX, Edith Jane Hooper and her husband Daniel of Fort Pierce, FL; Two Sisters, Anna Ruth Finocchio and her husband Nicholas of Chincoteague Island, VA, Janet Marie Helwig of Chincoteague Island, VA; seven grandchildren; several great grandchildren and host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daughter, Pamela Jean Resnick and five siblings.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, July 25, 2021, 5:00 pm at the Island Baptist Church, Chincoteague Island, VA, with Pastor Phil Bennicoff, officiating.
