Mr. William Frederick “Billy” Johnson, 65, of Chincoteague Island, passed away on June 28, 2021.
He was born November 20, 1955 in Wicomico County, Maryland, the youngest son of the late Robert “Elmer” Johnson, Sr. and Hallie Emma (Jester) Watson.
“Billy” grew up on Chincoteague Island, and excelled at sports while attending Chincoteague High School. He never met a stranger, loved his family and friends, and always offered a helping hand where needed.
Fresh out of high school, Mr. Johnson served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. The war being over and being honorably discharged in New York, he returned back home to the island to work the clam and fishing boats, and become a father. Sometime later, he moved the family off the island to work as an auto mechanic and eventually owned his own shop.
He is survived by his children, Jesse Dwayne Johnson and his fiancée, Krystal Wilt, of Stockton, Maryland, Lori Marie Johnson and her fiancé, C.W. Parks, of Mears Station, Virginia, Billy-Joe Johnson and his wife, Laura, of Stockton, Maryland, and Windy Grace Mason of Onancock, Virginia, brothers, Rev. Robert Randolph “Bobby” Johnson and his wife, Lynne, and Robert “Elmer” Johnson, Jr, sister, Amelia Denise Stevens and husband, Allen, co-father/”Pop,” Edward John “Eddie” Watson, of Chincoteague Island, 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and family friend, Pete Rowley.
Mr. Johnson was predeceased by a sister, Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Johnson Ellis, a granddaughter, Sabrina Marie Thornton, and a nephew, Joshua Dean Smullin.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at 2 pm at Salyer Funeral Home, on Chincoteague, with the Rev. Bobby Johnson and Rev. Star Johnson officiating.
