William Lenhardt, 71, of Temperanceville, VA died Friday December 9th 2011 at PRMC in Salisbury Maryland.
He was born in Trenton, New Jersey and resided in Hamilton Township until 1995 when he retired and moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia with his wife of 41 years, Susan Lynne Vanderbilt Lenhardt.
William lived a full life serving his country as a truck driver in Alaska during the early 60's for the US army, a fire fighter for Colonial Volunteer Fire Company of Hamilton Township NJ and for Atlantic Volunteer Fire Company in Atlantic, VA, a member of Masonic Lodge 121 in Temperanceville, VA, and retired after 30 years with Teamster's Union 701 of New Brunswick, NJ. While a Teamster he worked for the now defunct P.I.E trucking and for Tarantola trucking.
Over the years, William had won many awards for his service including Atlantic firehouse's Fire Fighter of the Year award.
During his service with Colonial VFC William held the rank of Engineer and Captain. He also held the rank of Assistant Chief and Engineer at Atlantic VFC as well as a member on the board of directors.
After retiring and moving to the Eastern Shore, William enjoyed camping locally and nationally, taking cruises to the Caribbean, and spending time with his family, who also live on the Eastern Shore.
Surviving are his wife, Susan Lynne Vanderbilt Lenhardt; children, Marcie Lynne Lenhardt McComb and and William John Lenhardt ,Son-in-law Craig McComb, and Grand Children, Zachary Fowler, Alexandrea McComb, and Konner McComb. Also, William is one of 7 brothers, all whom are still surviving, born to the late John Lenhardt Sr. and Marie Groh Lenhardt of Kuser Road, Hamilton Township New Jersey. He will also be missed by longtime friends Larry and Sara Goff of Columbus, NJ as well as many others from New Jersey and the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
People will remember William or "Big Bill" for his height (6'6 1/2"), his dedication to family and friends, his sense of humor, and for his huge heart. He was a great man who will be missed by all.
Friends are invited to call Sunday 7-9 PM at Salyer Funeral Home, Inc. in Chincoteague . Masonic Lodge Service will be held 7:30 PM Sunday at Salyer Funeral Home, Inc.. Friends are also invited to call Monday 1-2 PM. at Salyer Funeral Home, Inc.. .
Funeral Service will be held at Salyer Funeral Home, Inc., Chincoteague, VA, at 2 PM on Monday, December 12th, with Rev. Donald Blagg and Rev. Robert Reese officiating.
Interment will be held at John W. Taylor Memorial Cemetery in Temperanceville, VA.
